NEW LGBTQIA+ YA GRAPHIC NOVELS!

Northside students LOVE graphic novels, so we were pleased to find a list of new LGBTQIA+ focused graphic novels for Pride Month. From Heartstopper––a high school aged queer love story that also tackles topics in mental health and social inequality in powerful ways. (The story spans three volumes so far and is scheduled to be a Netflix series!)––to Bingo Love, a bittersweet story of two women loving each other well into their grey years. Here is a great roundup of uplifting graphic novels for our YA readers. This article on INKspire has the full reviews: https://inkspire.org/lgbtq-comics-graphicnovels.

LGBTQIA+ pride reading list

LGBTQIA+ Pride Month is commemorated each year in the month of June to honor the 1969 Stonewall uprising in New York City. In June of 1969, patrons and supporters of the Stonewall Inn staged an uprising to resist the police harassment and persecution to which LGBTQIA+ Americans were commonly subjected. As historian Lillian Faderman has written, Stonewall was “the shot heard round the world…crucial because it sounded the rally for the movement.” This uprising marked the beginning of a movement to outlaw discriminatory laws and practices against LGBTQIA+ Americans. Today, LGBTQIA+ Pride Month celebrations include pride parades, picnics, parties, workshops, symposia and concerts, attracting millions of participants around the world. This June marks the 50th anniversary of the first Pride March in NYC. Find out more about NYC Pride events and the history of Stonewall by clicking here.
